Carnelian (Sacral Chakra) (Zodiac = Taurus)
Carnelian is a stone I grew up with, so it really brings me back to my childhood. My family would walk along the Oregon Coast with buckets and we’d collect interesting looking stones that had been uncovered by the waves. We would bring the stones home and put them in the tumbler to polish. Many of the specimen we collected were Carnelian. Such a beautiful and rich stone. It radiates warmth and is quite uplifting!
Science – Carnelian is a member of the Chalcedony family. You may hear it referred to as Carnelian Agate, and that is correct as well, agate is a subset of the chalcedony family. It is orange or orange/pink in color and is semi-transparent, so if you hold a piece up to the light, you’ll be able to see the light shine through it.
Historical Significance – Carnelian has a very long history and was used frequently as a protective stone by the Egyptians and to receive boosts of energy and vitality. This gemstone is said to help someone overcome the fear of death which may have come from the Egyptians using Carnelian in tombs as protection in the afterlife.
Metaphysical Attributes – Energy, energy, energy! Carnelian is primarily associated with increasing energy, vitality and passion. Even though it is associated with the Sacral Chakra, which is of the Water element, this gemstone tends to “fire things up.” Like when you place a pot of water over a fire, it produces steam. If you want things to get “steamy” in your life, keep some Carnelian in your bedroom.
Carnelian doesn’t just inspire passion and vitality in the bedroom, but is also a great source of creative inspiration. It is known as the Artist’s Stone. Carnelian sharpens the analytical mind and awakens creativity, so one is able to take n idea from “vision” all the way though to fruition and creation. This gemstone is perfect for overcoming Writer’s Block. It you feel stuck, uninspired, or lethargic, put on a piece of Carnelian jewelry, or wear some in your pocket, and it will help pick you up out of the doldrums.
Finally, this stone is a transmutator. It is said to transmute negative energy to positive. For this reason, Carnelian is excellent for cleansing other stones and transmuting any built up negative energy to clear, positive crystal energy. Combining Selenite and Carnelian make for a fantastic stone clearing setting. If you are in a period of your life where you are struggling with anger, if you are in a disagreement with someone, or are in an abusive environment, Carnelian can help to dissipate the anger or fear and transform it in positive feeling and love.
Physical Effects – Again, Carnelian fires things up, so it has been used to help with infertility, low sex drive, and boosting one’s metabolism.
Practice Mantras – Sit in seated meditation, holding the Carnelian in your less dominant hand to receive its energy. Really feel the support of the cushion or floor beneath you. You are grounded and supported by the Earth’s energies. Imagine a bright orange light shining out from you in all directions. Repeat these words. “I am awake, energized, and ready to manifest my creative ideas.”
Alternately, hold a Carnelian mala and chant this mantra 108 times.
