Hematite – (Root Chakra) – (Zodiac = Aries & Aquarius
The heavy weight of this stone is so comforting. It reminds me of a weighted blanket used for anxiety. Hematite makes me feel like I am held in the giant hand of the Earth, being supported, soothed and focused just by the touch of the stone.
Science – Hematite is one of the most important iron ores in the world, because it is so plentiful, abundant and has so many practical uses. As much as it looks like it should be, Hematite in not magnetic. It is only slightly magnetic if it is mixed with enough Magnetite.
Historical Significance – Hematite has been associated most often with the blood. “The name hematite is from the Greek word ‘haimatitis’ which means ‘blood-red.'” That seems strange, right? It’s a shiny, black mineral… But, even though Hematite seems very black in color, ground up Hematite is actually Red, and is commonly used as a red pigment.
Metaphysical Attributes – This dark black/red stone is associated with the Root Chakra, and is a natural source of grounding and stability. Hematite is the Stone of the Mind and is perfect when one is feeling “scattered.” It helps to focus the mind and improve memory. If you are studying for an important exam, Hematite is helpful in that it encourages focus, improves memory, and generates calm during the actual test. If you are an author, Hematite helps you achieve precision in your message. Also, if you need to have an important conversation with someone, Hematite helps you find just the right words and soothes you to keep emotions in check during the discussion.
Like many of the black stones, Hematite is a protection stone and helps to dissolve and transform negativity. If you work in an emotionally toxic environment, this gemstone can help transform the negative energy around you into Universal light and love. The Hematite would radiate positivity from you and ensure the negativity does not follow you home. If you live in a negative home environment, keeping large specimen on Hematite in your room would provide you with a safe space and refuge.
Physical Effects – As mentioned before, Hematite is associated with blood, so it is said to help regenerate red blood cells. If you are donating blood (or receiving a transfusion), wearing this mineral on you afterwards can help with recovery. As this stone is both grounding and soothing, having some in your pillow at night can help to fall into a deep, sound sleep.
Practice Mantras – Sit in a seated meditation position, holding the Hematite in your less dominant hand to receive its energy. Really feel the support of the cushion or floor beneath you. You are grounded and supported by the Earth’s energies. Imagine energetic roots flowing down into the soft, cool Earth. The Earth’s energy flows up through the roots, up your body, and settles as a gentle pool of energy in your mind. Repeat these words. “I am calm, focused, and positive.”
Alternately, hold a Hematite mala and chant this mantra 108 times.
